What Type Of Dehumidifier Do I need? Desiccant or Refrigerant?

What Type Of Dehumidifier Do I need? Desiccant or Refrigerant?

Dehumidifiers remove moisture from the air. There are two main types of dehumidifier technology that do this: Desiccant and refrigerator coil technology.

Refrigerant Dehumidifier:

These work by condensing moisture out of the air. Damp air from within the building is drawn into the dehumidifier and passed over a cold evaporator coil which cools the air below its dewpoint temperature. This results in condensation that can be collected from the cold coils. This water is collected in a pan and either removed manually or some dehumidifiers have a hose through which the water is automatically purged.dehumidifier guy is the provider of best dehumidifier reviews and buying guide.
The dry air in the machine is then passed over warm condensing coils, heating the again before exiting the machine. This dry air is in many machines pushed out at pressure so can be directed at specific damp affected areas to accelerate drying.

Desiccant Dehumidifier:

These operate by way of passing air through a rotor which contains moisture adsorbent desiccant material. Once water is removed from the air, dry air can be blown back into the building, thereby encouraging drying. Water collected within the desiccant wheel is removed by adding heat so the vaporised moisture can then be ducted out of the building.
The desiccant material is typically silica gel, which is not of the usual ‘gel’ texture but is a porous form of granular silica, the internal structure of which comprises a network of microscopic interconnected pores. These can adsorb moisture by attracting it within each granule. It is by the addition of heat that this moisture can then be released from the desiccant by evaporation and pushed out of the building, leaving the desiccant wheel ready again to collect further moisture.

Comparing Performance:

The main benefit of refrigerator coil dehumidifiers over desiccant is that they can remove a larger volume of moisture per day. They are therefore particularly useful at the early stage of flood restoration when saturated materials require drying rapidly best dehumidifier

However, extraction rates do depend on the make and model of dehumidifier and we suggest researching the manufacturers’ guidelines of extraction rates of the equipment you are considering.Importantly, the two technologies perform differently in the lower temperature range. Desiccant dehumidifiers are capable of operating in cold temperature conditions, as the silica gel desiccant still adsorbs moisture regardless of temperature.

Condensation – Why have I got it & What can I do?

Condensation – Why have I got it & What can I do?

Condensation is dampness caused by water in the atmosphere. It is often first indicated by the presence of mould growth, which requires pure water for its growth and condensed water is pure.
In the home, excessive moisture builds in air as a result of daily activities such as washing, drying clothes, showers, cooking and simply humans breathing! When this moist air finds a cold surface with a temperature at dew point or below, the moisture condenses to leave the surface damp. Condensation often appears at low levels on wall surfaces where the wall is cooler, often where there is also limited air movement to remove saturated air. The appearance of this moisture profile is often mistaken for rising damp.dehumidifier reviews and buying guide.
Condensation is a problem because if left untreated it can lead to mould growth on walls, ceilings, clothes and furnishings, and can also lead to rotting of woodwork.
Important numbers to consider when assessing condensation are the relative humidity of atmosphere (RH) and the dew point. Relative humidity is the amount of moisture held in air, expressed as a percentage of the saturation point of that air. Dew point is the temperature at which moisture in air condenses to form dew.
Dew point is important to understand in relation to condensation. The greater the amount of moisture in air, the higher the dew point. Therefore, where lots of moisture in being released into the atmosphere, from power showers, boiling kettles, etc, the easier it is for dew point to be reached.
As an example, if relative humidity in a room is 50% (a fairly ‘normal’ figure) and room temperature is at 21 degrees Celsius, the dew point is as high as 10 degrees Celsius. When there is lots of human activity causing increased RH in a building, it is more likely that the dew point will be reached.
Where condensation is occurring on the lower parts of walls, there can also develop a cycle of condensation in that area: Air coming into contact with the cold surface reaches dew point and deposits water. This cold air falls to the floor and pushes up warm air into its place. This warm air reaches dew point and deposits moisture, and so the cycle continues. The atmosphere in the room is becoming more dry as that area of wall acts as a dehumidifier, however this is creating dampness on the wall.

Why is condensation now such a common cause of dampness?

In times gone by, buildings were more draughty. Open fires and gaps around windows and doors meant that moisture from daily causes could exit the building and be replaced with new, drier air. However, improved heat (and therefore air) retention in properties, by for example closing chimneys and installing airtight UPVC windows and doors, has lead to increased likelihood of high humidity levels inside. The following are some examples of causes:

Recommended actions for householders:

    • Prevent moisture spread throughout a property: For example closing kitchen/bathroom doors when cooking/washing. Open windows in these rooms when in use, for rapid extraction of water vapour.
    • Reduce moisture content: Provide ventilation to rooms so that water vapour can escape. Leave fans on a timer so that ventilation continues for some time. Trickle vents can be retro-fitted to windows and doors if required. Open windows in rooms where washing is left to dry. If using airing cupboards, try to provide some sort of ventilation.
    • Provide some heating: This will increase the dew point of the building materials, by keeping them slightly warm for most of the time (rather than with blasts of strong occasional heating). So keep heating on at low level to maintain an ambient temperature of 10 degrees Celsius.
    • New buildings: we note that new buildings often take a long time to dry out fully. In the first winter a new property may therefore require a higher level of heating and ventilation than in following winters.

Airflow – Use in Building Drying

Airflow – Use in Building Drying

Air movement has shown to be very important for rapid building drying. It serves to remove saturated air from near the surface of materials, deliver dry air to all affected areas, and to stimulate more rapid evaporation of moisture from damp surfaces.
Airmovers are usually most beneficial at the beginning of a drying program, when the fastest evaporation is occurring. Materials that absorb water particularly quickly, such as carpet, underlay and plasterboard, also give up that moisture quickly particularly if high velocity airflow can be achieved.dehumidifier guy is the provider of dehumidifier reviews and buying guide.
As to how many airmovers should be used in a drying job, there is some guidance from IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certifications), which is that airmovers ‘…should be set up so that continuous rapid airflow is provided across wet surfaces. In many structural drying situations, one of the most difficult areas to dry is the lower part of the wall where it meets the floor. Restorers should install one airmover for each 3 to 5 linear meters of wall, with the outlet of each airmover pointing in the same direction…’best dehumidifier

After the first 48 hours it would be expected that all surface water would be gone (assuming adequate extraction too place before drying equipment was installed). After this period, evaporation rate should fall and less airflow would be required.
A variety of studies has shown that during the initial period of drying, when a high velocity is required, airflow rates of around 3 – 3.5 meters per second should be achieved. After this initial period, as evaporation rates fall, a reduced rate of 0.5 – 1.5 meters per second is applicable. These figures can be measured with an anemometer.

    Tips for Preventing Burst Pipes

    Tips for Preventing Burst Pipes

Cold spells and empty homes are the most common conditions for pipes to burst.  If you are going away during a cold spell then bear in mind the following tips:
    • Insulate pipes with lagging in the crawl spaces and attic where the chance of freezing is at its highest.  Typically, exposed pipes in these areas lead to freezing pipes.
    • Central heating should be kept at a minimum of 12 to 15 Celsius if it is expected to freeze.
    • Allow warm air to flow into the loft space by leaving the loft hatch open so warmer air can prevent the cold tank from freezing.dehumidifier reviews and buying guide.
Cabinets and cupboards that contain pipes should have their doors left open; this will allow warmer air to circulate and reach pipes under sinks and also in outside walls adjacent.
Water supply to outside taps should be turned off.  Also mains water at the stopcock should be turned off unless a combination boiler requires constant mains pressure.
Consider draining the cold water system if you’re going away for long periods over the winter and want to save on heating bills.
British Insurance Brokers’ Association and Ageas have a free factsheet on protecting properties against burst pipes. This can be downloaded at biba.org.uk.best dehumidifier

Relative Humidity (RH) – What is it?

Relative Humidity (RH) – What is it?

Relative humidity if is often talked about in flood restoration and dealing with wet building assessment and repair, and people ask me what it means.
Air always contains some moisture in the form of water vapour, however most of the time this is not noticeable to our senses.  The amount of vapour that can be held in air depends on temperature, with a greater holding capacity in warmer air.dehumidifier guy is the provider of best dehumidifier reviews and buying guide
When air is holding the maximum amount of vapour possible at a given temperature it is considered saturated.  This may feel stuffy and noticeably humid to the senses.  Dry air, which contains a small amount of moisture, will feel crisp and refreshing when cold but when warm will dry the throat and can lead to a hard cough.
Relative Humidity is the degree of saturation, as it expresses as a percentage the amount of water vapour that air is holding relative to its saturated level.  Saturated air is therefore at 100% RH.  Air at 50% RH is holding only half of the vapour it could do at that temperature.
If that same sample of air is cooled, the RH will increase because the maximum weight of water vapour that air can hold is reduced. Conversely, if the air is warmed, RH reduces as the air at is capable of holding higher levels of moisture.
When measuring water vapour, it is expressed in terms of weight of water in a given weight of dry air.  Usually this is in grams of water per kilogram of dry air.best dehumidifier

A look inside a desiccant dehumidifier.

A look inside a desiccant dehumidifier.

A look inside a Meaco DD8L desiccant dehumidifier. (Which is actually a rebadged You Long YL-208A)
These dehumidifiers are much quieter than traditional compressor based ones. They work by rotating a drum of honeycombed desiccant material (zeolite) through an airflow from the area to be dehumidified, then through a heated section that drives the collected moisture out into a condensing panel.
I managed to fluff twice and suggest that these units are sensitive to being moved. They aren't. Traditional compressor dehumidifiers are sensitive to being moved during or just before use, since the refrigerant liquid can get into the compressor and stall it. These units can be dragged out the boot of a car and plugged straight in without a settling time.
The desiccant units are very lightweight since they do not contain much metal. Another advantage over the compressor versions is that these ones will operate efficiently down to near zero temperatures when there is virtually no moisture in the air anyway. Compressor units are very inefficient at low temperatures.
The reason for the air filter on the front of the unit is to prevent particulate from blocking the pores of the desiccant drum.
Although these units consume more power than an equivalent compressor unit with a low setting of typically 300W and a high setting of about 600W they don't use any more power overall since they bring the humidity down quickly and then turn off. The output is a stream of noticeably warm and very dry air.
These units are not to be confused with the absolutely useless desiccant dehumidifiers that are either a bag of silica gel or a chemical that absorbs moisture and then turns to slush in a plastic tub. The silica gel is OK for very small enclosed containers but not continuous room dehumidification.
Using a dehumidifier in a home prone to dampness like a coastal home or older style of building will solve many problems like mold and excess condensation on walls and windows. The dryer air is more comfortable and greatly reduces the need to heat the building excessively. Even at it's highest setting (about 600W) one of these units can be run continuously for a full day for considerably less than the cost of a cup of coffee from Starbucks. Most of these units have a laundry setting where wet washing can be hung indoors in the same room as the dehumidifier and it will dry it all quickly by removing the moisture from the air.
Although many of these units have quite complex electronic controls, I prefer the simpler version with just a high/low switch and a knob to set the desired humidity. Much simpler and potentially more reliable.dehumidifier reviews and buying guide best dehumidifier

Meaco 20 L Low Energy Economical Dehumidifier Review

This is a quick review of the Meaco low energy 20L dehumidifier. This popular 2 speed dehumidifier is efficient, and has an extremely low power consumption of only 255 watts, making it very economical and cheap to run. Probably one of the cheapest to run that I've seen for up to a 5 bedroom house that actually works well. Just keep in mind this is a compressor based dehumidifier, so if you are thinking of using it in unheated or cool locations, you may be better of with a desiccant type dehumidifier instead, and those are explained on the website in the link below.

Best dehumidifier reviews and guide 2016

I'm generally very happy with my purchase of Ebac 3850e but there are a few things you may want to weigh before buying this dehumidifier:

    Cons
    - It's about twice the size it appears to be in pictures
    - It's about 3 times as heavy as it appears to be in pictures
    - It's about 3 times louder than both the reviews and Ebac led me to believe (too loud for your sleeping space)

    Pros
    - It does all that it promises
    - It warms the space it's in
    - It's not an eye sore

FYI - In this review I have my Ebac 3850e on a folded towel, as the manual recommended putting it on a soft surface for the lowest noise. So be prepared for that.dehumidifier guy is the provider of best dehumidifier reviews and buying guide. best dehumidifier
